The medina of Fez is a warren of narrow streets (too narrow for cars) about 1 km square. It has not changed in centuries, perhaps in a millennium. When the French ruled the country, they left old Fez separate, and built at new city a few kilometers away. (The new city totally lacks charm; if you visit, stay in or near the medina.) In the summer (when we visited), the buildings and coverings over the streets keep the town remarkably comfortable.
