The souq (or "souk") is an area in which artisans live, work, and sell their goods. This photo shows an open region in the midst of the metalworking souq. 70% of the population of the medina of Fez work as artisans. Men and their apprentices (usually boys about 10-14 yrs old) hammer at brass pots, gradually (very gradually) shaping them to a fine finish. In one corner of this square, a blacksmith was hammering at his work, near his oven. When we returned later that day, he was still hammering. I've never seen people working so hard as I did in Fez. W
